When a general dentist recommends a patient be referred to a specialist, they should do so in the context of their own degree or limitations of experience, competence, and training, based on what is “appropriate and best for the patient.”

Here are some examples of when you might be referred for specialist dentistry:

  • You have badly impacted wisdom teeth that need removing.
  • When root canal treatment needs to be carried out.
  • When the dentition is broken or worn.
  • When gum disease is causing gum loss.

Dental Assessments

A healthy smile is a beautiful smile

We are here to take care of you and your smile. Our Dental Assessments are more than just a brief 10-minute check up, they can take anywhere from 30-45 mins. Our team carry out detailed full mouth dental examination, and oral cancer screening, they will offer dental advice and also provide a free full mouth iTero scan worth £150. They will offer you the best advice and opportunity to improve the look, feel and health of your mouth which will in turn improve your smile.

Your Dental Assessments should be a routine part of your dental and health care routine  and we offer Denplan Dental Plans to help you spread the cost . Dental exams are extremely important for preventing cavities, diagnosing common dental problems, and for keeping your teeth and gums healthy. During your examination, our dentists will take special care to look for any potential dental problems. Untreated dental problems can lead to costly treatment further down the line, so routine examinations are a great preventative measure.

During your dental assessment, you can expect your dentist to examine your teeth, gums and mouth. They will normally ask about your general health and any problems you may have with you teeth, mouth or gums since your last visit, give you advice, and discuss a your treatment plan.

Full Dental Treatment Plan

Our dentist will check your gums for any signs of gum disease, screen you for oral cancer, and assess the way your teeth bite together to make sure the forces are appropriate to keep your teeth from breaking. The soft tissue in your mouth, including your cheeks and tongues, will also be examined for health.

Dental examinations are used to detect oral health issues early on when they are simpler to treat, such as tooth decay, gum disease, and other issues.
The examinations are also used to inform patients about the ideal dental and gum care practises.

There are certain things you should look out for when it comes to your oral health. Your dentist can go through these with you and help you to improve your oral hygiene and be mindful of your mouth health.

Dental Hygiene

People often laugh when asked these questions by dental hygienists…

Would you walk out of the house every day without washing your face and hands?

The reply being “of course not” or “never”.

Would you go years without having your haircut?

“No, I get my haircut every 6 weeks”.

If your shoes were covered in mud, would you let the mud pile up?

“No, I would wash them or have them cleaned.”

So why do people neglect the hygiene of their teeth, one of the most critical parts of the body?

Teeth are relied on and work hard every single day to allow you to eat, swallow, smile and speak.  Let us help you look after your teeth so they can help you look after your health.

Our team will work with you to create a hygiene plan tailored especially to you. This will be designed to help you achieve a fresher, healthier and happier smile. You may be advised to have a hygiene appointment once or twice every year or where necessary for the health of your gums, you may be advised to visit for a hygiene appointment every three months. Our Specialist Periodontist, Dr Alan, is specially trained in the prevention and treatment of gum disease, at Morpho AD&A our Dentists have our patient’s best interests at heart and are passionate about keeping teeth and gums healthy.

Dental hygiene appointments are essential for everyone to reduce the build-up of plaque. However, they are essential with those patients who have or who have had gum disease and also for implant patients to ensure the area around the implant is kept clean and in perfect health. Having invested time and money in your implant treatment you will want to look after them and ensure the longevity of your investment. Visiting for a hygiene appointment every three months can help you keep your gums and teeth healthy and recognise any issues early on in order to address them quickly before potential problems arise.

Periodontal disease (commonly known as gum disease) causes the structures that hold our teeth together to gradually deteriorate, this is due to the plaque on the teeth building up and our body’s own immune system. When too many of the supporting structures are lost, the teeth will eventually become loose, fall out or may require removal. Our Periodontist will work with you to prevent gum disease or treat your gum disease whilst offering education and advice on how you can prevent any future accumulation.

Dr Alan Maxwell also accepts referrals for Periodontics from all other General Dentists in Cumbernauld.

Maintain good dental hygiene. To remove dental plaque, brush your teeth thoroughly twice a day and floss once a day in between your teeth.

Even if you wear dentures or have no natural teeth, schedule an annual appointment with your dentist. Use no tobacco products at all.

Bacteria are often kept in check by the body’s natural defences and proper oral hygiene practices like daily brushing and flossing.

But without good dental hygiene, bacteria may build up to the point where they cause oral infections including tooth decay and gum disease.

The golden rule is to see a dental hygienist every 6 months, to ensure that your mouth, teeth and gums are staying healthy.

Fillings

Fillings are common dental treatments required to fix holes or ‘cavities’ in your teeth caused by decay, breakages, teeth grinding or nail biting. There are various different filling materials available, and your dentist will discuss with you their recommendation and the benefits of each type of filling. At Morpho AD&A we do not use amalgam fillings. We only use tooth-coloured fillings.

Since fillings typically don’t last a lifetime, having routine dental exams can help you know when a filling might need to be changed. It’s vital to weigh all of your options for filling materials or alternatives, as well as to recognise the signs of tooth decay that suggest a filling might be required, whether you need a new or replacement filling.

There are several materials used for dental fillings. Gold, porcelain, silver amalgam (mercury combined with silver, tin, zinc, and copper), tooth-colored plastic, and substances known as composite resin fillings are all options for filling teeth.

Another substance, called as glass ionomer, also contains glass particles. Similar to how composite resin fillings are used, this substance is utilised.

Porcelain and composite fillings. Composite and porcelain fillings are the best and most widely used types of restorations. For people who have cavities, each of these methods have advantages.
